Introduction
This work builds on what I previously developed in Disruptive Innovation in Technology EDLD-5305 under Dr. Oge, where I introduced Clock-Skewed Learners (Silva, 2026) and examined how misalignment can gradually lead students to disengagement—not as a separate issue, but as a condition already present within the system (Silva, 2026). This idea emerged from my daily work in the front office, where I not only see new student suspensions but also the repeated return of the same students for similar behavioral problems (Barrera & Moriel, 2022). To apply Thomas and Brown's framework in practice, I first need to understand what is actually happening. I first need to investigate the problem. I cannot implement it effectively without a clear understanding of what is happening and the questions it raises.
First of all, I need to understand how misalignment develops and what types of disruption exist within the educational context, especially given that it operates across two dimensions: external and internal environments.
This study does not attempt to eliminate disruption; instead, it treats it as a natural human condition—something that must be understood and realigned (Norman, 2013). Although many people treat disruption as a problem, I see it differently. People move in and out of focus all the time, and when attention breaks, they need time to recover—and that affects continuity and the flow of learning (Mark et al., 2008).
I do not see this as a failure. I see it as part of how people actually function. Because of this, the response cannot be about control—it has to be about restoring alignment. Education is not just about efficiency; it is about meaning, purpose, and how people experience learning (Biesta, 2009).
At the same time, learning needs predictability. The brain looks for patterns to make sense of what is happening, and when those patterns break down, students lose continuity and begin to disengage (Friston, 2010). The distinction with the learning process may look like a behavioral issue, but it is not just that—it is also cognitive and systemic.
What appears as disruption in one context may result from misalignment between interacting systems rather than an individual deficit.
Building on this, Norman (1993) shows that human performance depends on the systems and tools around it; as a result, we need to understand misalignment as an ongoing interaction between people, environments, and structures.
I begin by examining how disruption happens beyond the school and how broader educational structures shape it. Although I do not explore all these layers in detail here, I recognize that disruption does not come from a single place—it moves across environments, especially between school, family, and larger systems. For this reason, I shift the next section toward investigation, starting with a broader view and then moving into the local context. Before I plan how I will approach SLE in my class, I complete this step as an essential part of my preparation."

2. From Theory to Practice: Bridging Significant Learning Environments to Real Conditions
I start this section with a simple question: if learning does not stay in one place, how do we bring significant learning environments into real conditions? Learning does not remain static. It does not stay in the classroom. It moves between home, school, and everything in between. Therefore, when we focus only on students, we miss the real problem.
I expanded this work to include parents and substitute teachers because they are part of the same system. Parents shape the environment, substitutes affect continuity, and students internalize both, making alignment a collective responsibility.
That is why this work brings all three together instead of treating them separately (Thomas & Brown, 2011). To begin with, this argument highlights the persistent inconsistency between educational theory and practical implementation. This issue does not stem from inconsistency in the theories themselves but from the fact that methodologies are ineffective when applied in isolation by educators. Many approaches explain how learning works, but they do not always show educators how to respond to real students. This limitation suggests that learning may require a more integrated approach that brings together elements such as environment, ARC, and passion, as Thomas and Brown (2011) suggest. As Thomas and Brown (2011) point out, learning happens when people actively participate through curiosity, play, and imagination. The purpose here is not to expand the theoretical discus discussion but is on, but to show how things work in real life.
At this point, I move from theory into practice. I focus on building something real—something that includes participation, interaction, and the challenges students actually face.
Instead of keeping these ideas abstract, I organize them into a structure that works in real conditions. To make the process more visible, I organize these elements below to show how they connect in practice rather than functioning as separate components. Based on the section, I include a detailed plan for how I will act in my classroom, integrating it with SLE and comprising three main components.
2.1 How I Plan to Integrate SLE with Parents as Partners
Here, I adopt a practical approach by guiding parents to create predictability, alignment, and active participation at home. Therefore, learning continues across systems rather than breaking down between school and family (Thomas & Brown, 2011).
In this way, I support both clock-skewed learners. I help learners who lose alignment across time and environments, as well as silent clock-skewed learners who disconnect without being noticed. I do this by creating predictability (Friston, 2010), maintaining alignment across systems (Norman, 1993), and helping parents understand attention patterns (Mark et al., 2008). By engaging families in active participation (Thomas & Brown, 2011), I turn learning into a continuous process across home and school rather than something that breaks down at the boundary between them.

2.2 How I Plan to Integrate SLE to Support Clock-Skewed and Silent Learners
Instead of pushing students away when something goes wrong, I reintegrate them into the learning process. I give them space to reflect, I guide their thinking, and I help them reconnect step by step. Even in the ISS, I keep learning actively. At the same time, I identify silent learners early—those who go unnoticed—and I support them before disengagement becomes deeper. SLE connection: I keep students involved—asking, thinking, and adjusting—where ARC and personal interest (passion) drive engagement (Thomas & Brown, 2011).

2.3 How I Plan to Integrate SLE with Substitute Teachers When I Am Not in Class
When I am not in the classroom, I ensure instruction continues. I keep everything clear, structured, and predictable so students continue learning without confusion. I also design routines, expectations, and flow so that any substitute can step in and keep the learning process moving. I make it simple, direct, and easy to follow.
From this perspective, I see substitute teachers as part of the system, not simply as temporary replacements—I see them as part of the system, not as passing figures but as contributors to the continuity of learning. Because of this, I prepare them with clear guidance, simple structures, and practical tools so they can manage the classroom and continue instruction with confidence. As a result, learning does not stop—it continues, it adapts, and it remains active, even across different conditions (Thomas & Brown, 2011).
Because schools depend on a large, constantly rotating pool of substitutes, and I take responsibility for guiding them with structure and clarity. In this way, I recognize that they often walk into classrooms without enough preparation or support. In doing so, I reduce fragmentation, sustain the continuity of learning, and respond to the gaps in onboarding and integration highlighted in research (Butler, 2025).
All these pieces work as one system, not separate parts. I do not eliminate disruption—I respond to it. As alignment increases across environments, learning becomes consistent, and students stay engaged and carry it over time. This is how I connect clock-skewed and silent learners with SLE in practice—by creating real conditions for realignment across systems.

2. Human Misalignment as the Core Challenge in Educational Institutions
Governmental systems such as the Texas Education Agency (TEA) establish the foundational conditions for schools to operate, including curriculum standards, certification, funding, access to technology, and transportation (Texas Education Agency, 2021). Because of this, these elements sustain consistency and access across the system. These structures allow schools to function within stable and regulated frameworks, grounded in organization, accountability, and the equitable distribution of resources. Yet beneath this order, they move through standardized expectations that do not fully attune to the individual rhythms of attention, emotion, and cognition. In this space, compliance begins to shape how educators and institutions act, often limiting their ability to respond in real time to human variability. Within this tension, I implement a Significant Learning Environment (SLE)—not by replacing the system, but by working within it—adapting practices, aligning learning experiences with institutional expectations, and sustaining coherence across the whole.
The core challenge, therefore, involves people. We often attribute misalignment to students, yet teachers, administrators, families, and staff also create and experience it. Individuals carry fragmentation into their relationships. This condition calls for understanding and realignment rather than correction. Learning emerges through participation and interaction (Thomas & Brown, 2011), while human behavior reflects deeper patterns shaped by affect, internal dynamics, and misalignment (Biesta, 2009).

As the previous table shows, parents play a central role in their children's academic development. Families shape cognitive, emotional, and behavioral patterns in the child's first learning environment, influencing how the child approaches learning (Zhang & Wu, 2025).
However, this influence does not automatically lead to alignment. Parents spend most of their time with their children, but many are not prepared to guide them in navigating school structures.
As a result, home and school often operate under different expectations, rhythms, and values. What should function as a continuous learning experience becomes fragmented.
In practice, the issue is not parental absence. It is the lack of coherence between environments. Furthermore, when that coherence is missing, learning cannot fully develop.
As Thomas and Brown (2011) suggest, learning emerges through participation and interaction within shared contexts. When this connection breaks, the Significant Learning Environment (SLE) weakens, making it harder for their methodology to function fully.

Lastly, the challenge extends to substitute teachers, who are often present but disconnected from the learning environment. Although they ensure instructional continuity, they are frequently underprepared, excluded from development opportunities, and limited to procedural roles rather than meaningful participation (Butler, 2025). However, Thomas and Brown (2011) argue that learning emerges through participation within a shared environment. Because of this, when substitutes do not align with the classroom culture and dynamics, they weaken coherence and disrupt learning. These conditions pose key challenges to implementing this plan using Thomas and Brown's methodology, as a Significant Learning Environment depends on alignment among all participants.

3. Broad Implementation and Cultural Propagation
To address this challenge, I embodied Thomas and Brown's concepts of embracing change and making change visible, identifying marketing as the most effective solution.
Marketing strategies shape how people think and engage through clear communication, good design, and repetition. In the same way, people do not learn solely because someone explains an idea, but because they see it and experience it in practice. Over time, this is how they begin to understand and connect with a Significant Learning Environment (Lee, 2023). At the same time, this connects with Thomas and Brown's (2011) idea that learning grows through participation, interaction, and shared environments—not control. So, for this to work in practice, the school needs to keep the message active through daily experiences, clear language, visual presence, and repeated opportunities for people to engage with it and make it part of the culture.

3. Core Framework: Translating Thomas and Brown into Practice Across Students, Families, and Substitutes
In this core section, I develop a cross-analysis between my Clock-Skewed Learners framework and the principles of Thomas and Brown (2011), showing how each concept can be applied across different roles within the educational system to reduce misalignment and support a Significant Learning Environment.

In this analysis, I adopt the Significant Learning Environment (SLE) as a guiding perspective, moving through a collective set of educational methodologies, and including those presented in Understanding by Design (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). Each approach offers meaningful contributions to learning. Even so, even as they address specific dimensions with precision, because they do not fully restore alignment across systems, emotional regulation, and continuity over time.
As a result, the need to apply Thomas and Brown's (2011) framework becomes more evident—not as a complementary layer, but as a central structure capable of integrating these gaps into a coherent and functional learning environment, as you can observe in Table 5A

4. Organizational Impact and Holistic Learning
From this perspective, holistic learning does not mean adding more programs. Development does not mean adding more programs; it means creating coherence across the conditions that shape development. Learning is not only cognitive—it is also existential (Biesta, 2009). When students lose a sense of purpose, coherence, and a sense of mattering, misalignment grows. With that in mind, we need a holistic approach that reconnects learners across systems (George & Park, 2016).
Learning stability depends on continuity, predictability, and alignment across environments. When these elements fracture, students begin to lose focus, and engagement quietly slips away. When they align, they support regulation, participation, and sustained learning (Kestere et al., 2015). From an organizational perspective, when schools implement the Clock-Skewed Learners framework across classrooms, families, and substitute-teacher structures, learning begins to function as a connected system rather than isolated actions. It is in this moment that the model becomes truly holistic and where what was once fragmented begins to reconnect and move as one. As Thomas and Brown (2011) suggest, learning is not something delivered but something lived, emerging through participation within a dynamic and living environment. Immordino-Yang, Darling-Hammond, and Krone (2018) show that social, emotional, and academic development are deeply connected and depend on relationships and supportive environments. In this sense, my framework moves beyond classroom management or behavior. It focuses on reducing fragmentation by aligning the environments that shape learning: the classroom, the home, school support systems, and moments of interruption (Souza et al., 2024).

From this same perspective, holistic learning still does not mean adding more programs. It means building coherence across the conditions that shape development. According to Panadero (2017), brain development depends on opportunities to engage actively in rich environments, relationships, and meaningful experiences. These conditions shape how students think, feel, and learn.
The Clock-Skewed Learners model follows this idea. Disconnection does not stem from a single cause—it emerges from the interplay among routines, relationships, emotional regulation, and continuity across settings. Furthermore, this is where something deeper becomes visible.
We can understand this human factor as love, not as sentiment, but as a biological and relational condition that creates connection, alignment, and meaningful learning across systems. Research shows that human connection is essential to well-being and survival, supported by processes like dopamine, which drives motivation, and oxytocin, which strengthens bonding and reduces stress (Nealon, 2025). In this sense, this idea aligns with Thomas and Brown's (2011) perspective: learning does not come from control—it grows in environments where people build connection, participate, and use imagination to make meaning in a world that is always changing.
Within this framework, families, schools, and communities do not work separately. They work together as interconnected environments in which relationships sustain learning and reduce fragmentation. Because of this, schools need to move from reacting to disruption to intentionally designing conditions that prevent misalignment before it grows—strengthening connections across all the systems that shape the learner.

5. Learning Philosophy
I express my learning philosophy through poetry—not as decoration, but as reflection—because some ideas go beyond structure and require lived experience and contemplation. I use imagination in this process, just as Thomas and Brown (2011) explain in A New Culture of Learning, where learning grows through experience, reflection, and meaning-making beyond formal structures.

6. Conclusion: Learning, Opportunity, and Growth within an SLE
This paper starts and ends at the same point—the core of disruption. At that level, disruption stays the same; it emerges from how people behave, regulate, and participate. Although it may appear different across contexts, only the form changes, not the condition. Therefore, the solution does not derive only from systems or resources, but from how people act within them.
Throughout this process, one idea becomes clear: opportunities alone are not enough. People must recognize them, position themselves, and choose to engage. However, when we shift the focus from blame to alignment and action, we create change. Learning does not depend on eliminating disruption; it depends on creating conditions that sustain continuity, participation, and alignment—even within imperfect systems. This is what makes a Significant Learning Environment real.
As this work develops, it also becomes personal. In identifying Silent Clock-Skewed Learners, I recognize that I was once one of them. This realization confirms that misalignment is not external—it is human. Therefore, we need something beyond structure—a force that connects people and rebuilds continuity. If misalignment separates, connection restores balance.
In this sense, Thomas and Brown help me understand something very simple but very powerful: learning does not happen only at school—it happens everywhere, through people, interactions, and our connections with the world. However, education feels fragmented because we try to separate what is actually connected. When I understand this, I stop looking for answers only inside the classroom and start linking ideas from different areas to support my work. I do not just use their theory—I use it as a way of thinking. I use imagination to ask better questions, connect ideas, and construct meaning, while grounding everything in real research. As a result, this process reshapes how I think and helps me bring these ideas into real learning environments.
In the end, this reflects what Thomas and Brown (2011) suggest: we do not control learning; instead, we cultivate it as we adapt and engage with a constantly changing world. Because of this, I use Significant Learning Environments as the foundation of my classroom, focusing on creating meaningful engagement. At the same time, I carry this same approach in my journey as a teacher, constantly adapting, connecting, and learning alongside my students.
